Important Information About the May 3rd, 2010 Lecture


Dr. Jane Lubchenco, scheduled to appear at the International Speakers Series tonight, was called back to Washington DC today by President Obama. As Chief Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Dr. Lubchenco is a critical part of the management team dealing with the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tonight's lecture will be given by Dr. Mark Hixon, Professor of Marine Biology at Oregon State University and renowned expert on the relationship between ocean acidification and climate change. Dr. Lubchenco will appear later in the Spring, date to be announced.

All Lectures will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland, OR

Always controversial, he is sharply critical of current international economic policies, global enforcement institutions, and the Obama Administration’s financial industry rescue plan. As a nuclear power bordered by Afghanistan, China, Iran, and India, Pakistan’s global strategic importance cannot be overstated. Pervez Musharraf was President of Pakistan at the time of the September 11 attacks and growing Muslim militancy; Time magazine described him as having “the most dangerous job in the world.” Although President Musharraf became the United States’ chief ally in the region in the struggle against Al Qaeda and global terror, he was the victim of two assassination attempts and his internal policies alienated Islamic fundamentalists.
